The workshop

We could not find the machine we needed

ShapeXpert was not born in a design office. The machines were designed in a shaping workshop, for a shaping workshop, by someone who has been shaping since 1988 — and who uses them every day to produce his own boards.

A finished board on the machine supports, inside the booth: the deck curve, the green clamps and the air hoses, the floor covered in foam dust.

Why these machines exist

Three observations, and one decision

  • Outsourcing takes your margin and your lead time. Right now you order, you pay and you wait for your preshape. With a CNC, outsourcing lead times and costs are gone.
  • The CNC machines on the market are not made for a shaping workshop. Designed for metal or cabinetmaking, they are too expensive, too bulky, and unable to swallow a five-metre blank.
  • Machine builders sell machines. We shape. Flipping the blank, holding it down, the surface finish, the dust extraction: every technical choice comes from the workshop, not from a design office.

We could not find the machine we needed. So we built it.

2ND ELEMENT SAS

The company behind the machines

ShapeXpert is a brand of 2ND ELEMENT SAS, a French company. The machines are designed, built, assembled and set up in France, and meet the CE marking requirements.

The machine installed at Gong Factory: aluminium profile gantry, vertical spindle, and four adjustable vacuum pods holding the board above the frame.

The first production machine is installed at Gong Factory. Three more workshops will be equipped with one by the end of the year.
